Women’s History: Redefining Ambition and Success Across Generations

Women’s History: Redefining Ambition and Success Across Generations

Welcome to a very “special edition” of my bi-monthly resource newsletter – published this week in honor of Women’s History Month. It’s also very special to me, personally, to be sharing this. In fact, I’ve never been more excited to share something in my decades long career as a working MOM. 🎉💗

Even though the theme of this email is to celebrate successful women across generations, successful fathers with working partners can also take note – this is something that will be of interest to you, too, because we ask (and answer for me) the question:

“What will our kids (daughters, especially) say about their working Moms after they grow up?”

I know what MY daughter, now a successful solo entrepreneur herself, says about the working Mom part of me, and what SHE experienced and embodied as a result of that. How? Because we talked about it openly on a popular podcast about leadership and motherhood!

For context, I first met the delightful Executive Coach and podcast host, Leanna Laskey McGrath late last year to talk about burnout and the pressures of the corporate world on working mothers for a potential interview on her Leadership and Motherhood Podcast.

At the time, Chief released research on the state of women’s ambition, and I was enthusiastically sharing with Leanna how the findings of that research resonated with me, having navigated my own ambition over the years, and now observing how my adult daughter is navigating hers.

One conversation led to another when Leanna brilliantly asked “would your daughter be willing to be interviewed with you?” Having had an instant connection, we both knew how interesting and inspiring that could be.

And so the collaboration began. Leanna released the episode in honor of Women’s History Month. I found her email introduction to it so engaging, I’m sharing some of it here:

“In honor of Women’s History Month, I sat down with a mother-daughter duo for a powerful, honest conversation about ambition, identity, burnout, career pivots, and what daughters quietly learn from watching their mothers lead.

We covered so much, including:

  • How our identities get wrapped up in corporate titles
  • What happens when our ambition doesn’t align with the corporate ladder
  • The grief and growth that come with career transitions
  • The subtle expectations firstborn daughters carry
  • How the example we set quietly shapes our children’s beliefs about work and possibility”

One of Leanna’s biggest takeaways from this conversation is that our children are always watching; they are learning what is possible from our example.

What would I add? Trust and honor what is right for you and for your children. Today we have choices to chase ambition on our own terms, no matter what generation we belong to. Pay attention, because your children do.

I’d love to hear from working Moms and Dads on what resonates with you!

In honor of past, present and future working Moms everywhere,

Loretta
