Ways to Show Your Team Some Love

Did you blink and the month of January went by? Welcome to February! The next few weeks are the perfect time to focus on LOVE – for your team AND your loved ones, including yourself (did you think Valentines Day was just for romance?)

Last week, I hosted a webinar outlining 3 Steps to Getting Promoted in 2025 and Beyond. I spoke about the importance of investing in mid-level leaders (i.e. intermediaries between C-Suite and front-line workers and customers) who are the life-blood of any size organization. These leaders are burning out or choosing not to advance to the next level because they have so many challenges and so little skill-building and leadership support. When it comes to promotion time, they learn of expectations others have of them that they didn’t previously know. Or they hear perceptions that in their own mind, are simply not true or not aligned with how hard they have worked.

Watch the Replay.

Many often hear, “Well you are ready for advancement, but we don’t have the budget, or backfill, or there is a promotion freeze, so hang in there.” As a result, these important leaders leave the organization in search of a better place, or burnout recovery, or choose less responsibility and more flexibility over the continuous stress and constant mindset regulation that comes with proving oneself worthy of the next level.

In honor of this month of love, one good way to start showing your leaders and team that you care is by making their work and value to the organization more visible. (BTW, this also has a direct, positive effect on you as their leader, too). I often speak with clients who want to do this, but they wonder about how to communicate the team’s value, and that of their own, without coming across as boastful or self-promoting. Creating multiple channels for communicating, focusing on impact, sharing facts over fluff, and encouraging cross-functional opportunities with other teams and managers, are just a few ways.

Would you LOVE to have your best employees promoted (amidst the challenges I referred to earlier)? One thing you CAN do is not wait for promotion time to advocate for them. Let’s face it, it may not be up to you and you alone to say yes to the advance, especially when it comes to moving up the corporate chain. To show your care, you can also think of yourself as a Sponsor, and develop a partnership with your best players to make agreements around what you will do, and what they can do to fulfill their partner role.
